Embarrassingly bad service!!! The staff couldn't have been ruder. I've eaten here on two separate occasions and have been shocked by abrassiveness of the servers and hosts. As a local I will go out of my way to avoid this establishment in the future, it's clear that this restaurant's goal is to cater to tourists who will never return anyway! Lifes too short to put up with bad service!!!

This is the first steakhouse I've visited where you get to cook your own steak. I loved having this option, since I'm male (LOL) and love to grill. I ordered the bacon-wrapped filet ($28) and was able to cook it to my liking. There are seasonings available at the grill to put on your steaks. The sides are quite large, can be shared by two people. The service was excellent, just right. Salad bar, included in meal, has a reasonable amount of items that are fresh. Keep in mind that this is a touristy area, so prices are high. The wine list is OK, could be better, but acceptable.

I don't understand all the negative reviews of this restaurant. What may be different is that I welcome the opportunity to cook my own steak and expected to spend some cash. I also know that the salad bar has been expanded/improved in recent history (more on that below). I went in with a group of 8 three weeks ago (reservation recommended). We were greeted warmly, seated quickly, and our drink orders were taken right away. I was immediately pleased with the comfortable, laid-back atmosphere. A little dim in the dining area upstairs, but the grill area was well-lit. The food was fantastic. The salad bar was diverse, fresh, and well-stocked. We had the smoked salmon, artichoke dip, and crab cakes for apps. They were all fantastic - however the crab cakes literally took the cake. Normally I find them very fishy tasting, but at the 8th Street Steakhouse they were not overpowering and exactly to my liking. One should definitely understand that this is a u-cook-it steakhouse. That's why they have a ginormous clock right next to the grill. The butcher also asks how you want it cooked and recommends cooking times (which were spot on - bravo steak monger!). In my opinion, most of the charm in these types of steakhouses comes from the "community" grill approach to cooking the food. The grill area was large enough to accommodate my party of 8 plus two other diners and we had a fantastic time chatting them up and entertaining ourselves. It made me wish that I like my steak well-done so that I could have chatted a bit longer. That being said, I ordered the monstrous Prime New York Strip and followed the butcher's recommendation of 8 minutes per side. Voila, my steak came out to my exact definition of medium rare. I also had a side of steamed asparagus, which was wonderful. The baked potato dessert finished everything off nicely. All in all, this place rocks. A steakhouse above all else, and above most others. Keep up the good work guys!

Great meal and fun concept of cook your own meat. They provide everything to cook a great steak. We had the filet which was great. Staff were very friendly and attentive.

Engaging western hospitality, very friendly and great for the family. Top quality cuts of buffalo chicken & fish. The local following is strong. Cooking with your family and friends is a blast!

Expensive and poor quality steak. There are too many other good places to eat in Steamboat.

Came up during mud season, (back to school week) wanted to try out some great food, and came across 8th street. Saw the steakhouse, and decided to try out. Little did I know, I got to cook my own steak. Pretty cool If you ask me. I would say a score of 4 on the price, considering you do most the work, but.......good steaks! Buffalo steaks also! I'm a local Denver business owner, and love supporting local businesses. Cheers.

My girlfriends and I went here after hiking all day and were not happy when we found out we had to grill our own steaks. The cuts of meat were great however so we made the best of it. Honestly, I will never go here again. I could grill steaks at home for half the price. The atmosphere is okay, nothing spectacular. I'm giving it 3/5 simply because the steaks were of great quality and they had a really good salad bar.

Solid place! Good food, fun to take my daughter to and let her cook a steak. Definitely a little overpriced but worth it to go once for the experience. Would be a regular here if it were about 20% less expensive. Service was spectacular.

The most unique dining experience ever.. Well maybe not ever... But right up there. Great steaks, fish, and fresh chicken. Grill your own is definitely different but a great change of pace. The Buffalo steak was excellent. And the potato and creamed spinach was excellent.. Will definitely return when in town next time

For all those who have this place bad reviews... They need to be examined. 1. Yes it's a cook it yourself dinner = fun!!! Met new people, enjoyed a great atmosphere. 2. Yes it's expensive = it's a steakhouse!! Duh! Who cares. If you don't like the price then leave. Let us who want to enjoy the dinner stay and have a good time. 3. Always listen to the meat counter guy... He knows the beef and the times they should be cooked. I ended up trying the buffalo... Great flavor and extremely tender. My hubby got the New York prime. That was so amazing as well. Huge salad bar. The Texas toast was light and delicious. Great beer and hot cider. The garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were top notch! Finished the night with the "tater" and cheesecake... There was nothing left to take a picture of ;) will eat there again when we visit. Great place, friendly fun atmosphere and worth every penny!! Had a wonderful Christmas with my husband!! Thank you!!

We loved this place! Salad bar was great and the steaks we cooked were amazing! The only thing my husband was nervous about was everyone gathers around and uses the same tongs over and over cooking their food and it doesn't seemed they get washed often. He has a seafood allergy otherwise we wouldn't have gave it a second though. Will come back for the food though!

You select your steak and cook it yourself or the chef will cook it for you. I had a ribeye which was very tasty This is a really good steakhouse with a wide variety of wine

Living in Steamboat my girlfriend and I go out twice a month for dinner. When it came to celebrating our most recent anniversary I asked her where she wanted to go. Her response was simple 8th Street Steakhouse because of all the restaurants we have gone to in Steamboat and we've literally been to every single one of them 8th Street steakhouse is a consistent performer of quality and a wonderful experience. The staff is friendly informative and extremely helpful. The foods good and staff is constantly walking past the grill talking to you about meat and helping you cook your own stake. For us it's a wonderful full experience every time.

Love this place! My parents brought me here many times as a kid (when it was called Boomerang's) and it's just as great as I remember! You get to choose your own meat from the display case and grill it yourself. They're very helpful when offering advice to both select and grill your meat to your liking. Unlimited salad bar and of course the Texas toast- yum!! Service was absolutely great and the meat is excellent. My favorite is the large NY strip, great cut of meat and grilled perfectly. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Everything is clean and well-kept, and the atmosphere is fun for families, groups and couples. For dessert, the Ice cream potato (cookies and cream ice cream shaped like a potato and covered with chocolate and whipped cream) is amazing and creme brûlée is also a sweet treat. Highly recommend this place - prepare to have fun and eat great!

If I'm going out, I want someone else to cook for me. In all fairness, I know this was a "grill your own" place going into it, but as I was with a large group I didn't push the issue. But even in the context of a cook-your-own place, I still give this two stars. Our service was absolutely horrible. We had to ask several times for drinks, used plates and glasses were left of the table, and the seating was way too crowded. My husband did the grilling, and said the grill was very uneven, even 6 inches apart for two steaks. Also, the grill room gets so smokey that he smelled like grease for the rest of the night. Just meh.

Love this place! I come here every summer to visit Tim, Danya, and Mary. Truely an awesome place to have a super high quality cut of meat. Yes you have to cook it yourself, get over it! I was skeptical the first time and ordered the prime rib. I quickly found out that the experience is cooking your steak with your friends while enjoying a libation and talking about how freakin amazing Steamboat is.

  • J C.

Great atmosphere and food! You can grill your own steaks or they can do it for you. Upstairs seating is quieter and ideal for families. For kids they can sit on little horse saddle chairs. Expect to pay more for fresh cut steaks, but well worth the cost. Highly recommend them for special occasions or just a great meal!

Must try the stuffed mushrooms. And for dessert, be sure and get 8th street tater...ice cream moulded and colored to look like baked potato with sour cream..but really cookies and cream ice cream topped with whipped cream. Unusual and enough to share.

Summary: Great service, unique but mediocre food, a good one-time tourist destination. Food: You cook your own steaks, ranging from NY strip to buffalo ribeye to USDA prime steak. The lower quality meat is about $14-25 and is only OK. The top-end meat is really good, but it's typically $34-38 (including salad bar, excluding sides). These prices are completely mismatched from the laidback, cook-your-own-steak atmosphere. These prices are really high for Steamboat, so 8th street needs to decide if it's an upscale steakhouse or its cooking style is going to be the draw. Both together just feel out of place. Service: Our waiter was fantastic, super attentive and great with our large group (14 people). Value: Honestly, Steamboat has better. But it's probably going to be the best steak you'll find in Steamboat, so take your pick...

Made it back here with a group of 20 or so on the annual steamboat trip - and it was just as delicious as i remembered. My sis and I split the buffalo steak - yes they have buffalo here - it was leaner than other cuts and not being a big red meat eater in the first place .. .well it was really good. Texas toast, all you can eat veggies at the salad bar and a "baked potato" for dessert . ..mmmmmmm

First thing to know about this steakhouse is you cook your own steaks ... not my thing, but the little brother loves it. And what little brother wants, little brother gets at the expense of cooking my steak. The meat selection is pretty good. There is fish and chicken for those who don't eat red meat and dishes you can order off the menu that the kitchen cooks. Your entree comes with a salad bar, nothing to rave about here. The sides are classic steak sides and are tasty, but nothing mind blowing. The wine list is nice. The service is very good. I certainly recommend making a reservation as this place is always packed. Whoever designed the layout didn't think about winter ... The bar is always packed and there is no place to wait for your table. I prefer sitting upstairs, so I don't have to eat my dinner freezing due to the front door being constantly opened...

Food was good. We were in town for a college visit and saw the Steakhouse, thought steak sounded good, were pleasantly surprised we got to cook our own steaks and Texas toast. That was a fun treat for me and my 2 teenagers. Order the less expensive steak, because the all you can eat salad bar comes with it. You do not have to order sides either, because the steak, toast and salad bar will leave you stuffed. Expensive though and opens at 5, late if we wanted to pop in for a drink and some munchies.

I wish we had read the reviews before we went. Grill your own. Cook your own dinner. Do all the work. That's what we wanted from a pricey dinner out. The waitress was nice enough, but they really do set you out on your own, back to the meat dept behind the salad bar where you order from the case of meats, then back to the salad bar and then to cook your meat. It's a workout and not relaxing at all. The loud hum of the fans and the smoke from the grill permeate the restaurant with noise that's a little too loud and smells that cling to you for the rest of the night. It's fine if you like smelling like eau de cooked meat.

  • Daniel B.

Lots of fun! When is the last time you said that about a restaurant? Why you ask? Well, this is a place where you choose your grillable dish and then you get to go up and grill it. Makes for great conversations up at the grill and in case you are nervous they will walk you thru grilling it just how you want /like it! I have been coming here for years! more than 10 now and I always get a great meal served by some of Steamboat friendliest staff. I highly recommend you give it a try, it is an experience you won't soon forget! Great for singles (good bar area), good for couples, and great for groups too. I have been here as all of those and with groups as big as 80 ... just make a reservation and they will take care of you. I always get a great meal every time I go!

This is a very nice grill-your-own steakhouse. The décor is great - with a rustic appearance but very clean. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our experience there. As with most places like this I thought it was a pretty poor value. I just didn't feel like the steak was worth the price paid as compared to other places with similar prices.

I don't write a review often but felt compelled because the owner Tim is awesome.... He was working the bar and running the place which is always a great sign.... Great food and service and so much fun to pick and cook your own (high quality) meat.... Highly recommend

Had a birthday dinner for a friend here last night and it was awesome. Pretty pricey ($250+tip for 4 of us) but we didn't skimp. I had the filet mignon and my boyfriend had the buffalo we had the shrimp cocktail and a 1/2 lb of crab legs. It's a pretty fun concept and the food was amazing. The service was good and they even gave us a free dessert (this potato ice cream thing). All in all very fun. Not an every week type thing but great place for special occasions.

8th Street Steakhouse is a nice and welcoming restaurant. Although I would not recommend it for an every night spot to eat it is nice to change up the routine and cook your own food. 8th Street Steakhouse is a very comforting restaurant. The waiter even took a photo of our family! 8th Street Steakhouse is a restaurant that can result in s great experience or a bad experience. It depends, if you are a good "chef" and can cook steak decent that you will really like their food. Now if you are a bad "chef" that you will not have the experience that others might enjoy. Overall, a great steakhouse and a fun and unique experience for the price! I would definitely recommend it!

Very pricey like I'm sure everyone's stated, this is meant for special occasions only for me but it's a nice experience, our driver was super nice and helpful! Great varied selections of meats that you can personally hand pick, cool self grill area, and we ordered truffle fries which I've never had before that but I loved them. Neat experience and nice staff from our visit.

Many of us being first-timers to Steamboat, we were looking to do a little celebrating on our first night in town. We managed to celebrate - AFTER dinner, at our own place...this "steakhouse" was terrible. To the point that we UN-recommended it to a random table of people sitting behind us, when we heard them discussing where to go for steak. "We can't tell you WHERE to go, but we can tell you NOT to go to 8th Streek Steakhouse." To start: It's a choose-your-own-adventure type of place. You get a menu with drinks, appetizers, and sides listed. Entrees are in the form of raw meat that you choose from a cooler. Salad bar is included with every entree, along with unlimited Texas Toast. The salad bar was unimpressive, to say the least - it was approximately 3 feet long, and didn't contain much variety. That said, it was still probably the best part of the meal!! We ordered mussels in white wine garlic sauce as an appetizer, because it was advertised as a special, and only $5. Well, you get what you pay for....they weren't awful - we received only a few in the two pounds that were unopened (dead), and the mussels themselves were fairly clean. A few were gritty. The sauce was served in a small cup in the middle of the bowl - the mussels hadn't been cooked in it, and it was all incredibly bland. Now - we're from MN, so it's not as if we have extremely high standards for seafood....but these were worth exactly $5.... Let's get on to the entrees. They are pricey - anywhere from $16 to $45 for a steak, which does not include any sides (well, except the unlimited texas toast). But here's the kicker - you have to cook it yourself!! Ok, so at first, we were surprised, but then thought it might actually be fun. Wrong. The grill has a ton of hot spots, so everything cooked unevenly. I read reviews stating that people had to increase or decrease the recommended cooking time - we had two steaks that were identical in size, about 4 inches from each other on the grill - one came out Medium after 5 minutes per side - the other came out RAW. Not even Medium Rare. All in all, the steak was all pretty grissly - not a ton of meat on any of them. The one of us who had the Buffalo steak enjoyed that the most. The sides were terrible - the garlic mashed potatoes tasted as if they were made from a box. The creamed spicach was more like pre-made spinach dip. And the texas toast was up to you to grill, as well. Please, please - save yourselves some money, and choose one of the many other steakhouses in Steamboat.

No idea what people are giving below a 4-5 star rating for on this place. If you can handle putting a piece of meat on a grill for 20 minutes then it's awesome. Great filets. Great service. Works for me.

Came in for a burger at the bar after a long day skiing . Watching new year days football game. Tried ordering burger at the bar. Told we needed to cook our own burger. Are you kidding me?!? Ordered nothing. Not impressed at all

We had to come back for a second dinner the food was so good. We ordered the salmon and it was so fresh. Also, the salad bar is all you can eat. This is a great place to dine.

Nice management! Went in for their happy hour (4p-6pm) steak burger $5 there was four of us but they said they only had 3 - they ended up making more because more ppl were requesting them. 8oz steak burger -delicious - interesting place they let the customers grill their own meat but if you don't want to do that they will do it for you too. Dessert was awesome fried ice cream cookies and cream made to look like a bake potato. Overall good place!

The best managed restaurant in this town is the 8th St. Steakhouse. Yes, it is a grill your own. If they are not too busy, the chefs will grill them for you. But it is sexy to take a beer or a glass of wine straight-up to the grill with your date & grill a steak (or shrimp, chicken ect) to your own standards. But there are a couple of other fundamental reasons I go there once a week. I get treated right in this place. Just about every guest gets welcomed by the "Big Guy", Tim. Danya is the best bartender in the town. This restaurant is very clean, the salad bar is remarkably fresh. & it is a great bar. Very comfortable, great steak-house lighting, smooth music, a fresh ambiance, a staff that cares about people & deliver positive energy. They know their cuts of meat. They are very refreshing. I recommend 8th St. to my family & friends whenever they visit Steamboat. Know what you're getting into. Do your homework. Accumulate some free appetizer or 2$ off drink coupons & go have a night at 8th St.

Fun, fun and more fun if you have kids and want to spend some money! You cook your own steaks. Please understand this before you go! And because you cook your own steaks, your kids will LOVE IT! My ten and seven year old boys got a huge kick out of being able to pick their own steaks and then bring them to the grill to season and then cook. It's vacation time! You're in Steamboat Springs! Live a little and have some family fun! My wife ordered the Buffalo Steak which we all thought was the best piece of meat ordered. My five year old little girl ordered the Mac & Cheese off the kids menu and was in heaven. And, she got to sit on a saddle which was brought up to our table. Keep in mind, this meal will not be cheap. And, if you want fine dining, you should go some place else. But if you have kids or a large party that just wants to have fun with some good food that you will cook yourself, this place is it. Smores at your table for dessert. Yes, the kids loved it!

This place is great. We come up to steamboat once a year and always make it here. The staff is always great and helpful. If you listen to them the steaks turn out great and the salad bar is almost worth it just for itself.

  • Charlie P.

Great family dining experience. The steaks were fantastic and every one in our party enjoyed cooking them. The guidelines they provided for cooking the steak were perfect. They do allow splitting the steak to share but there will be an additional charge for the salad bar. The is no option for the restaurant to cook the steak for you. If that is a problem then this restaurant is not for you.

My wife chose this place to give daddy a break from cooking and a a way to have a great steak. Surprise! The gimmick here is that you have to cook them yourself. The pricing is insane. You will pay towards $35 just for a small rib steak, and that's before the sides, each of which will cost $5-7 bucks. That's way beyond big-city steakhouse pricing but with the gimmick of self-cooking. I hopefully asked if it was local organic beef or somesuch to help myself justify spending that much money on a steak but the server demurred with a canned "i'd have to check in back on that" Even with that, there is a line out the door of people waiting to get in. My recommendation is that you avoid this place and head to the supermarket to get a club-pack of rib eyes (which may well be local, and are certainly of the same or better quality) and some frozen vegetables. Do the self-cooking at the rental condo, under the broiler, and you can serve 8 for the price of one meal here. On the plus side, I know how to cook so the steaks weren't bad. And the kids had a great time. And I guess another positive point vs cooking at home is that I didn't have to clean up.

  • Kenny J.

I'll keep it short: Cool restaurant idea, poor execution. Meat selection is nice, but way over-priced. Sides are limited and also way over-priced. Salad bar was way under-sized. I ordered a Buffalo steak (can't remember the cut), and it was good, but not $35 worth of good. It cost me $50 to leave the place and I had Buffalo, asparagus and water. Hmm... Now, the asparagus was the best I've ever had! Cooked perfectly. Crisp and perfect. Loved the sauce.

    (2)
  • Randy M.

Overpriced. If I cook the food myself I would expect quite a discount in prices. They should offer an option to cook for you, if you want to cook yourself then offer a discount.

    (1)
  • Michelle M.

Cook your own steaks-These steaks were awesome! My hubby the gourmet chef ;) cooked mine perfectly and this was a superfun family meal. He made his steak teriyaki and we recommend the asparagus and baked potato sides! Also s'mores for dessert are a must!!

  • Brett F.

Let me start out by saying that my eight year old picked this place out when we walked by it. I was throwing out every other option at him. But, It was better than I thought it would be. The service was pretty slow, but then you really don't need the server since you do everything yourself. I just wish they brought a pitcher of water ( which was very slow) - then we wouldn't need anything. We had the Filet and the Ribeye, the filet was much better, the meat lady offered to butterfly it for us which really helped for cooking. When you go to cook, they have salt, pepper, garlic, seasoned salt and teriyaki sauce. I just did the Ruth's Chris trick of salt, pepper and butter (it was over there for the Texas toast to make grilled bread). It was pretty good. Now, if you want a GREAT steak, go somewhere else, but the kid loved this place! The salad bar was fine. My son loved the make your own s'mores they brought to the table after dinner. My wife just ate the salad.

Great cuts of steak...pick your own and grill it to perfection. Owners are great hosts, fun atmosphere.

  • Derek G.

Yeah, um it's a cook you're own steak place. I bit into my filet and thought to myself. Yup, this tastes like something I'd make. As another reviewer wrote, "your kids will love it", if you an adult looking to enjoy a nice steak, leave the kids at home and go someplace else. The salad bar was ok, my twice baked potato was good, but a little salty. My filet, I give it a C+. I was caught off guard with this place. I don't want to think about salmonella when at a restaurant. The plate you return to your table with is the same as the one you brought the raw meat to the grill with. Just remember to remove the wax paper from the plate before returning the cooked steak. I've said enough.

What a giant joke of a "restaurant". Seriously, do you want to spend $65 to smell like a grill? Our server was pathetic at best. He took us to the grill, we let him know we were uncomfortable and needed help. He promised to be back in one minute...fast forward to 6-7 minutes later...we had to flag him down. By then the shrimp was overcooked but of course we were shit out of luck. Spoke to the manager who took off our crab cake appetizer...ummm it wasn't our appetizer that we had he issue with! He was a nice younger guy but seemed a little clueless when it came to customer service. After showing him that the shrimp weren't edible he took them off the bill as well. I agree with other yelpers that this place is a tourist trap at it's finest. They didn't even have an orange slice for my Sunshine Wheat beer. :(

No Bueno ! Our first time to Steamboat and not impressed at all. We are just passing thru. I thought it was weird when I retuned from the restroom and I had to ask the waiter for my own menu. He brought me an appetizer menu. And then told me that the regular menu was "a visual menu". The whole thing was just as stupid as everyone has already explained. Should have done my research ahead of time. The sign at the corner says, " best steakhouse in Steamboat Springs", they should add to that, "depending on how good of a cook you are."

8th st. Steak house was fabulous . I'm a true doody, I rolled in late and was treated to a awesome meal!! The owner and the staff were tired but friendly and accommodating . My wife had a steak and I had king crab legs. I rally luv the theme, cook your own steak while having a cold beer.

Grill your own steak with some brews and some friends. I can't complain. The quality of the bone-in ribeye I selected was very good - great marbling. My fiance had an NY strip that was also very nice. The salad bar was just average. Grab a piece of the Texas toast, butter it up, and toss it on the grill as well! My only complaint is that for $35 for the ~20oz bone-in ribeye; I would have rather it been dry aged, but I guess the price was on par with the rest of the touristy downtown.

  • Foodisgood S.

Overpriced, cook your own steak joint. Didn't these types of "steak houses" go out with disco? The definition of a tourist trap! Service is sketchy. For what they charge they should cook it for you and have great service, but they do neither. If you want a good steak don't waste your money/time here. Try the Ore House at Pine Grove for excellent steaks at fair prices, great service and real Western Colorado charm, kids welcome too!

    (1)
  • Robert M.

One of the best steaks I've ever had. You do have to cook your own steak, but they will help if you need it.

Poor quality meat. Over priced! The salad bar was disgusting. Try something else in Steamboat Springs!!!

    (1)
  • Scott N.

Cooking your food makes for a different and fun experience, but the price doesn't reflect doing the cooking yourself. The meats cuts are excellent and the staff is well prepared and willing to help you cook it just the way you like it. This was my 2nd visit and I will be coming back again for sure

  • Ty R.

I love 8th St. Steakhouse. It has the best beef in town. Grill your own meal isn't on everyone's agenda for a vacation but it is worth it. I grew up in Steamboat so I've been to every restaurant in town at least once. The meat here is so good because it comes from local grass fed free range cattle. For those of you who may not know that is good stuff. No feedlot beef here. Just a tasty cut of beef done your way.

    (4)
  • Elizabeth R.

Definitely skip this one. It is a tourist trap the likes we have never seen before. Overpriced steak you have to cook yourself, and their "famous" mushroom appetizer comes out bubbling, but only because it's been under a broiler. It was stone cold and raw / hard under that, and the server could offer no help. If the idea of paying $40 for a steak you cook yourself sounds like a good idea to you then maybe check it out, but based on the food, this place must survive on the unwitting tourists that wander in and then never return...

I'm not a huge fan of these cook-it-yourself places - why go out to eat? (When we went in, I was under the impressison that they still cooked everything but gave you the option to cook it yourself too.) If I overcook my $30 steak, I can't send it back! I'm also not a fan of the kids sneezing on their hands and then sticking them into a bag of bread to make Texas toast. The sides were good, but they're a la carte and a little pricey - and the salad bar is very basic (hope you like ranch dressing!). I think I'll find some place to cook my steak for me next time!

Cook-your-own lovers only. Very nice steaks, but a dark setting and overpriced sides. Have a burger, watch the game and call it good.
